Canberra Venue Guide
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about a list of Canberra venues, their locations, capacities, specs, style of music, etc….well, I’d be rich beyond my wildest dreams (I’d have perhaps $100!). So, here is one. Email me to get another venue added if I’ve missed any, or to add extra detail.
The Greenroom
Canberras number one venue for live music. Recently moved from Phillip to the University of Canberra in Bruce. It gets the Just Bands No.1 venue rating for several reasons…..consistently good lineups, dedicated management, great sound & a good reputation. The move to UC has increased the capacity from around 200 to around 800 which will allow Gaz to put on some bigger & better shows/bands. The Greenroom boasts an impressive PA, although there is often a charge for its use…which is fine, just be prepared for it & make sure you get the punters through the door to make your Greenroom gig go off.

The ANU Bar
The ANU Bar has for many years been the venue for some of the best shows Canberra has seen & continues to to host a number of great bands & events. It’s a flexible venue that can be configured to suit shows ranging from a few hundred punters up to well over 1000. They do have a half decent in-house PA, although you’d need top bring sound in for bigger shows.

The Venue
A fairly new venture into a previously unexplored area for live original music in Canberra….Tuggeranong. The Venue has a decent sized band rom (approx. 500 capacity) along with a seperate bar & also a pool/snooker room. They’ve had a fairly wide & varied array of music since opening…from local band nights, through to currently charting bands, via country stars & a host of big names from yester-year.

The Pot Belly
Canberrra’s biggest little venue. Tucked away in Weedon Close, Belconnen…The Pot Belly is one of those places that any & all Canberra musos have played in at one time or another. There’s a small stage area tucked up one end of the long, thin room. I’m not sure of the current in-house PA status (although I’m nearly certain they do have a small one…which is all you’d need here). Bands regularly on Friday & Saturday nights. Great for that intimate show with a great atmospehere you’ve been planning.

The Transit Bar
Having been through a few name changes/transformations since opening (Aree Bar, Church Bar), the Transit Bar is now starting to establish itself as a decent venue option in the city. The bar holds perhaps 200 punters, has a reasonable stage, cosy seating scattered around & a couple of pool tables for in between sets. It can be a tricky room for sound, having lots of wooden floorboards. All up though, not a bad option. Cardboard Charlie runs “Sound Underground”, a regular Thursday night event @ The Transit Bar.
